As I sit down to write this and reflect on my journey through infertility and IVF, I’m overwhelmed with a mix of emotions – gratitude for where I am now, awe at the resilience my husband and I had throughout the process, and a deep sense of empathy for those still battling infertility.

My path to motherhood was anything but straightforward, and it was a journey I wouldn’t wish upon anyone. But I also understand that infertility has increased in prevalence across the years and many have had to resort to In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in hopes of having a family of their own.

Amidst the struggles and setbacks we faced in our journey, valuable lessons were learned – lessons that I wish I had known before embarking on this emotional rollercoaster ride. So, in honor of Infertility Awareness Week, I’d like to share five things I wish I knew before starting my IVF journey.

5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My IVF Journey

5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My IVF Journey

  1. It’s Okay to Grieve: When my husband and I first decided to start a family, we were filled with hope and excitement. I first got off of birth control pills after a long 5 years of taking them in hopes of being pregnant in the next month or two. However, month after month of negative pregnancy tests brought a sense of despair and heartache. It’s essential to acknowledge and validate these feelings of grief. Whether it’s the loss of a dream, the frustration of unanswered questions, or the sadness of failed treatments, it’s okay to mourn the life you envisioned. Permit yourself to grieve, and don’t be afraid to seek support from loved ones or a therapist who understands the unique challenges of infertility. Sometimes finding others going through the same journey is also helpful.
  2. Educate Yourself: Knowledge is power, especially when navigating the complex world of infertility treatments. Before diving into IVF, I wish I had taken the time to educate myself more thoroughly about the process, potential risks, and alternative options. Understanding the various protocols, medications, and procedures involved can help alleviate some of the anxiety and uncertainty surrounding IVF. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, do your research, and seek out reputable sources of information. Knowledge empowers you to actively participate in your fertility journey and make informed decisions alongside your medical team. I personally went to Shady Grove Fertility and saw Dr. McCarthy-Keith and loved her. But I have heard of others not having the best experience with their IVF so please educate yourself before choosing your clinic and doctor.
  3. Prepare for the Emotional Rollercoaster: IVF is not only physically demanding but emotionally exhausting as well. Highs of hope and anticipation can quickly be overshadowed by the lows of disappointment and despair. From the anticipation of starting a new cycle to the nerve-wracking wait for pregnancy test results, every step of the IVF process is fraught with emotions. It’s essential to prioritize self-care and cultivate coping strategies to navigate these emotional ups and downs. Whether it’s practicing mindfulness, journaling, or seeking professional counseling, find what works for you and prioritize your emotional well-being throughout your IVF journey.
  4. Financial Planning is Key: Let’s face it – infertility treatments, including IVF, can be prohibitively expensive. From diagnostic tests and medications to procedure costs and additional services, the financial burden of IVF can quickly add up. Before embarking on your IVF journey, take the time to assess your financial situation and develop a comprehensive plan. Explore your insurance coverage, research financing options, and consider budgeting for unexpected expenses. While the financial aspect of IVF can be daunting, having a clear plan in place can alleviate some of the stress and uncertainty surrounding the cost of treatment.
  5. Celebrate Every Victory: Amid the challenges and uncertainties of IVF, it’s essential to celebrate every victory, no matter how small. Whether it’s a successful embryo transfer, a positive pregnancy test, or reaching a milestone in your treatment plan, take the time to acknowledge and celebrate these achievements. Each step forward, no matter how incremental, brings you one step closer to your dream of becoming a parent. Surround yourself with a supportive network of family and friends who can share in your joys and offer encouragement during difficult times. Remember, you are stronger and more resilient than you realize, and every hurdle you overcome brings you closer to the light at the end of the tunnel.

Reflecting on my own IVF journey, I am filled with gratitude for the two precious miracles that now fill my home with laughter and love. While the road to motherhood was long and something I never expected to endure, it was also filled with invaluable lessons, moments of profound growth, and unwavering hope.

To anyone embarking on their own IVF journey, know that you are not alone.

Reach out for support, lean on your loved ones, and never lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel. Your journey may be filled with twists and turns, but remember, the destination – the joy of holding your precious baby in your arms – makes every step worth it in the end. Feel free to connect or ask your questions privately if you want to chat more about your infertility and IVF journey. As I mentioned, having someone to talk with who has gone through this helps, and wish I had that while I was going through my infertility journey.
