Mom Shout Out Awards

Over the weekend, I was at another kids birthday party. While trying to keep an eye on my little ones, I caught the eye of a familiar mom. This mom was familiar because I recognized her from my kid’s school. She was not familiar as a fellow classmate’s mom, but she is on the school’s staff as well as being a mom of three children.

Now I know plenty of the staff are moms, but seeing one of them in person on the weekend no less, got me to thinking. Usually, on the weekends, I have a recurring wish that school was open on the weekends. Maybe not the entire weekend, but long enough for a hot meal, a nap, or a solo Target run. At times, I want to rush through the weekends so I can get a “quiet” moment to myself and avoid the millions of questions from my two-year-old or millions of request from my four-year-old to watch the tablet.

But what about those moms from the school? Do they have the same wishes? Do they wish for some time away from their kids? If so, how do they catch a break when school is in session?

As you know, being a mom is hard. For every late night/early morning combo, extra 5-10 pounds, or sacrifice to self-care, there are tender moments of cuddles, kisses, and proclamations of I love you, that make being a mom worth it.

What’s even harder as a mom, is we don’t always get our props. I get it, we don’t become a mom for a thank you. However, there is no shame in recognizing or giving a fellow mom a special shout out. We’re all in this together, so let’s support one another. I’ll start. I want to give a special shout out to the following moms:

Daycare/School Moms
Moms who are responsible for other children deserve a special shout out. Sometimes I escape “mom life” by going to work. However, for these moms, there is no escape. Well, they “escape” their kids, but their job is to be around kids all day. Then, they go home to their own kids. These moms deserve a gold star for real!

Waitress Moms
Dinner time at our house wears me out sometime. Every day is a crapshoot – to eat or not eat, that is the question. When the kids do not eat, I have dishes to clean as well as playing the refrigerator Jenga game of finding a spot for all the leftovers in the fridge. Sometimes that game is preferred to playing the cleanup game after dinner with two toddlers. Cleaning the high chair and table can be grueling work depending on the meal. The request game during dinner is no better. Requests for more water, more food, and/or reheating food are tiresome.

Moms who waitress hold a special place in my heart. As a former waitress, I remember what it’s like to be personable and responsive to guests only to receive a small tip. At home, there is definitely no tip after dinner time, but at least they’re my family. I appreciate you waitress moms!

Housekeeping Moms
Keeping a clean house takes time, effort, and sometimes some extra help. A housekeeper can be a gift from the heavens. I can’t imagine keeping other people’s homes clean and then clean my own home when I have kids at home. I mean seriously, cleaning up Play-Doh from area rugs, endless fingerprints from windows, and never-ending crumb trails in my own home is one thing, but potentially doing this again and again? I salute you, moms!

Now, this is no way a complete list of all shout-outs. However, I do want to tip my hat to these moms and all the moms who are reading this post. If you haven’t heard it lately, let me tell you. You are doing a great job as a mother! You got this mama!

  1. I love to just giving the mom an or even a day to herself. I’ll plan a play date so she is free to have the time to pamper herself.
