As soon as we add “mom” to our identity it seems the first thing to go is sleep. According to research done by Mattress Firm, new parents report that they hear some variation of “you look tired” 144 times a year.
For me, it started with pregnancy. Restless legs. Crazy {hormonal} dreams. Not to mention not being able to sleep on my stomach! I thought I was tired THEN. Well, we all know, it doesn’t really improve when baby arrives. Late night feedings. Cluster feedings. Days and nights mixed up. All of it. Not to mention the old adage of “sleep when baby sleeps” that others remind you of constantly is much harder to actually do then say. After that first “my sweet babe slept through the night” feeling it really feels like it is up hill from there. Until your four year old can actually get out of bed and COME into your bed in the middle of night. And mine doesn’t exactly snuggle – he manages to take up more space then my husband and 100+ pound dog. I’m not there yet- but I’m sure when we add practice, homework and games to the weekly schedule, our somewhat established bedtime routine will be rocked once again.
However, as we prepare to welcome baby #3 to the family, I have a new perspective, thanks to Mattress Firm, on why and how sleep needs to be priority {over all things, including the laundry and dirty dishes, that always seem to be there no matter how much sleep I get}.
Six things you need to know about sleep:
- Getting the right amount and quality of sleep can have a dramatic impact on your life and your mattress plays a large role in this. As experts on how you can get the best night sleep, Mattress Firm knows this well.
- Whether your first child is on the way or you have a full house, finding a bedtime routine that works for your entire family isn’t easy. With different sleep schedules, it can be difficult to get the proper amount of sleep.
- With work to get done and other priorities at night, sleep often gets short shrift at the end of a busy day. Getting adequate sleep may seem impossible for new parents, but it’s essential for resolving stress and preparing for the morning ahead.
- Mattress Firm recently conducted a study designed to expose the value of a good night’s rest for new parents, by revealing surprising data about their sleep habits.
- From diaper duty and late-night tantrums to potty training and bedtime stories, there’s no doubt that parents work hard. But at Mattress Firm, we’re here to remind you to take a deep breath and remember to sleep harder.
- Convenience and comfort are key for new parents and late-night feedings (breast or bottle) can be made easier with an adjustable base.
