Getting Out…without Sweating Off Your Lady Bits

Ahhhhh, June, that sweet spot!  It’s the time of year after May madness that is the end of the school year, before July 4th vacations and the eventual ramp up for back to school. This is when you can get out and about before the city becomes HOTlanta. Need some ideas to help get your outdoor fix on? Don’t worry, we’re here for you! We’ve got five places for you to try, either WITH your kiddos or by yourself:

  1. Smyrna Food Trucks: Add this to your calendar right NOW. Come on Tuesday nights for dinner instead of cooking! From May through early October, there are a variety of food trucks that show up at Taylor-Brawner Park from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. every Tuesday. See this week’s food truck list on the City of Smryna Government’s Facebook page. Bring a blanket, some bug spray, and something to shade yourself. The park has plenty of green space to picnic, and the kids can run around and burn off all their energy after eating. No cooking + tired kids = Win!
  2. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park: Hike up the mountain and enjoy great views! Learn more about the history surrounding the park, go for a bird watching walk or see artillery demonstrations. There’s always something going on.  Check out their event calendar.

  3. Marietta Square Farmer’s Market: On Saturdays, the market is open from 9 a.m. – noon, and Sundays (May – October) from noon – 3 p.m. Get your YUM on. There are so many different things offered; the market averages 65 vendors. There is everything from fresh fruit, vegetables, to flowers, tamales, and smoked trout! Truly something for everyone. We love coming here as a family and end up eating most of our purchases before we even get home. A delicious way to help support your local community
  4. Sweetwater Creek State Park: We come here primarily for the hiking (also dog approved!), but there is SO much more to do. Fish, geocache, camp, stay in a Yurt (this is a bucket list item of mine!), or bird watch. The best part? It’s only $5 for parking. You can buy an annual ParkPass for $50 that helps to fund trail upkeep, renovations and more improvements in the park.

  5. Green Market at Piedmont Park: This market runs Saturdays  (May – October) from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. by the 12th Street and Piedmont Avenue gate.  They have fresh produce, hot and cold beverages, ready to eat items, bath and body items, as well as stuff for your four-legged friends. Who doesn’t love to hang out in Atlanta’s iconic park afterward?  Check out their vendor list here. Again, another great way to support local farmers and businesses. Look at you, do-gooder.
