Already Tired of Resolutions? Try Goals Instead!

Ahh, the New Year’s Resolution. Every year January 1st arrives and we make resolutions and anxiously look forward to a new year. And every year it’s a challenge for most people to even remember their resolutions weeks later. Research shows that fewer than 10% of people keep their resolutions for longer than three months. Being a mom is the busiest job there is, so where in the world are we supposed to find time for resolutions?

This year instead of failing at the resolution game for yet another year, I’ve decided to do something different. I’m setting goals, not making resolutions. In my career, I’ve been privileged to learn about goals and the power of making “SMART” goals.

SMART goals are frequently used to guide a company’s growth. They are defined as Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. If it works for businesses, why can’t we apply this concept to our own lives? I find that many things I learn in my professional career translate to real “mom” life. After all, my goal as a mother and manager of my family is to develop and grow my family. SMART goals are perfect for making this happen for you and your family.

You can Google SMART goals and be instantly treated to a host of templates, forms and other tools designed to help you create your goals. Pick something fun that fits your personality. Choose something that appeals to you because you need to revisit this document at least once a month (or weekly if you are really going for it this year!). This is a great project you can do with children of any age. My oldest daughter is autistic and I was able to work with her to develop goals for this year that fit her likes and interests. Call me crazy, but my 3-year-old also has a SMART goals sheet. Things like regular teeth brushing and transitioning from daycare to an educational preschool might require tracking as well!

Don’t worry about your goals being too light or delving too deep if you are ready. Your goals sheet will allow you to regularly check in, document your progress and change course when necessary. I think you will see greater success in reaching your goals versus making a resolution this year.

One goal for 2018 is to write 12 successful blogs for the Atlanta Area Moms Blog. I am excited to have one under my belt so far this year! Join me in setting SMART goals for you and your family. Give it three months and let’s check in on each other to see if progress has been made!

Good luck!
