Do you ever find yourself mindlessly scrolling through your social media, seeing all these awesome ideas about how to be the best mom ever? What about the ideas to be super green, healthy, organized, and making the world a better place? Then you get this urge of excitement because YOU are going to do all of those awesome ideas at your house!
If you are anything like me about 99% of the time I end up with a #pinterestfail.
Seriously.
This is an example of me trying to make “jello worms” for my daughter’s Halloween themed birthday party:
Even my then 3-year-old knew we were in trouble with this project…
At least I know how to put name tags on the “mummy juice!”
If you don’t know me personally hopefully you can tell I’m not known for my arts and crafts or being handy. HOWEVER, I am persistent.
And that’s around when I decided to start composting…
Two years ago. YES. Two years ago I firmly decided after years of contemplating that I wanted to begin composting. It seemed like a foreign and complex idea that only super intellectual green thumbs could do.
I COULD NOT HAVE BEEN FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH!
Step-by-Step
- Collect compost materials.
- Put materials aside.
- Throw them in a pile outside.
- “Turn” them every now and then.
Seriously. That’s it. Now you’re composting.
Without really trying!
If I can do it, you can too. It is as easy as having an extra container in your kitchen or pantry (whichever is more convenient for you). I keep the small one shown in the picture above which isn’t very large as we take it out fairly frequently. The air freshener just happens to be there as it is the only outlet in the kitchen my toddler can’t reach. Final rules :
- Kitchen scraps like coffee grounds, vegetables, fruits, peels
- No Meat or Dairy
- Abstain from items that have been flavored
- Layer and turn with shovel or hoe every now and then
- Use for soil in your garden
