Unless you’ve been living under a rock, it’s hard to escape the phenomenon that is Mah Jongg. There’s nothing like the thrill of calling out “Mahj!” across a crowded clubhouse room, the determination to find play sets in the theme of your favorite college or living room colors, or the agony of watching the very last tile you need get thrown into the ether.

Years ago, I started cold turkey and joined an established neighborhood meetup – talk about trial by fire! Recently, however, I took a few group lessons as part of an official tutorial. The most important factors for me as a beginner are to be part of a group that welcomes questions, friendly banter, and is flexible with my learning curve.

If you want to pull up a chair to the Mah Jongg table around Atlanta, here’s where to begin:

Mah Jongg Maven – This was my first stop for resources. They sell the official cards that you need in order to play, and have a colorful array of tile sets, gifts, and accessories. Want to immerse fully? Check out their 2027 Social Mahjong Retreat Weekend.

1 Dot Mah Jongg – I took my group lessons/guided play from 1 Dot at Stitched Gifts. Owner Alison Hertz is patient, engaging, and eager for everyone to feel successful.

Smiles and Tiles Mah Jongg – Mobile Mahj!  I met the owner, Kat (AKA Wicked Witch of the West Winds), at a PeakZen event. She is committed to affordable lessons, with a portion of all proceeds going to charity.

Two Sparrows – This mother-daughter team offers lessons, both open and guided play, leagues, and tournaments. Plus, they design their own sets!

Atlanta Mahjong Studio – Find a league, take classes in different styles of play, or reserve a table at their facility. Be sure to read the story of how they began!

Let’s Rack and Roll – Another group that will come to you – they facilitate lessons, tournaments, leagues, and all types of events. You can also join them at local restaurants for a specialized experience.

Mahjong Social – Follow them on Instagram to see where they are popping up next!  They have curated themed events for various levels of play.

Atlanta Mahjong Mentors – Located in Dunwoody, they believe that Mah Jongg is a way to “boost brain health,” which includes memory and critical thinking skills. Book a private lesson or group class.

Outside Atlanta, be sure to visit Oh My Mahjong, where you can find a teacher, become a certified teacher, or just shop ’til you drop.  Bam Good Time also has a search engine to find a club or tournament, and an informative blog.
