When my son started his freshman year of college in Boston, he discovered skateboarding. He hung out at the skateparks around campus and then found “prime” places to practice in the summers when he lived in New York City.
He’s finally home in Atlanta this summer and has his picks for the best skateboard parks in and around Atlanta.
TOP CHOICES
Historic 4th Ward – Boasted as Atlanta’s first public skatepark, it was designed for skaters, by skaters, and claims legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk as one of its backers. You’ll find it along the Beltline, and there are designated sections for beginning, intermediate, and advanced athletes.
Arthur Langford Jr. Skatepark – Known as Atlanta’s second official skatepark, it is advertised for beginners, with a lot of open space. My son says that any level can hang here. You’ll also find this fun spot off the Beltline.
Brook Run – At 27,000 square feet, this is the largest skate park in metro Atlanta, near Dunwoody. Whether you are just starting out, or consider yourself a “street skater,” this course has the flow for you!
The Village – This indoor skatepark offers all kinds of opportunities – lessons, workshops, clubs, and meet-ups. It’s a non-profit located near the Georgia Tech campus.
Fowler Skate Park – Nestled in the Cumming area, skaters will enjoy several types of obstacles and challenges. For children 12 and under, this park specifically is available Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 4 to 6 pm; Saturday, 9 to 11 am.
McKoy Skatepark – I have fond memories of watching my niece tackle this course in Decatur. It was renovated earlier this year, thanks to the grassroots efforts of the Decatur High School Skate Club.
Kennesaw Skatepark – A nice-size course, coming in at 40,000 sq. ft. It’s a Street League Skateboarding Foundation Certified Skate Plaza, flow course, and bowl. Bikes and scooters are not permitted, but wheelchairs are welcome. Be sure to bring your helmets for skaters ages 15 and under.

HONORABLE MENTIONS
Union Hill – This pop-up skatepark is the only place kids are allowed to skateboard in Alpharetta, due to an ordinance passed a few years ago.
Pickneyville Park – Another good option for beginners, located in Norcross. If you get tired of skateboarding, head over to the roller hockey rink!
DeShong Skate Park: Click the link to see a video of this Stone Mountain park, with many features that skaters love.
Settles Bridge Park: Head over to this smaller skate park in Suwanee, and bring your dog and your basketball to enjoy their other amenities.
Skate ATL– Atlanta’s only indoor skate park! It’s a Street League style skatepark with smooth concrete and masonite ramps. Designed and built by skaters, for skaters and also serves as a skateboarding academy.
