Supporting Special Businesses In and Around Atlanta
The other morning, I met a friend for coffee. When we were deciding on a place, she suggested RISE Coffee & Tea in Roswell. It was out of our way, but she insisted it was worth it – and she was right. Run by adults with special needs – BaRISEtas – we were greeted warmly when we walked in the door. Our questions were answered, our orders were handled with care, and served with a smile. The atmosphere was simply joyful! Their other programs include Bloom Work & Play and Shine Health & Wellness.
RISE isn’t the only establishment run by folks with different abilities. When people in this population turn 22, they age out of the public school/county system, and resources become very limited. Thanks to their entrepreneurial loved ones, they can develop skills and earn a wage, addressing a huge unemployment issue for this community.
Check out these other inspired companies:
Brewable – They have two locations, one next to Roswell United Methodist Church and one in the Alpharetta Community Center. Their Brewistas will take good care of you!
Mend Coffee & Goods – Over in Buckhead, the Wolf family has created a wealth of experiences for people with disabilities. In addition to their coffee shop, their organization, Hope Heals, facilitates summer camps, retreats, inter-ability gatherings, and support groups for moms.
Brightside Cafe – Next time you are in Buford, visit the place “Where Drinks and Friends Make the Best Blend.” In addition to their shop, you can reserve their “on the go” cart, which delivers coffee, cocoa, or smoothies to private events.
Wonderfully Made – If you have more of a sweet tooth, then make sure you place a cookie order to be fulfilled by the Wonder Makers. Orders can be picked up at Peachtree Church in Atlanta.
Special Kneads and Treats – Born out of a desire to find meaningful work for their adult son, the Kohler family in Lawrenceville has not only built a thriving bakery, but also a free birthday cake program for qualifying families.
