It’s October- Orthodontic Health Month! And as much as my kids view it as “gorge yourself on candy corn month,” for me, it means something more. It means making sure they understand the importance of taking care of their smile now – rather than someday. After all, good oral hygiene habits start now, when they’re young. At my orthodontic practice, Newpark Orthodontics in Alpharetta, we do everything we can to reinforce healthy habits in children’s lives and offer innovative orthodontic treatment that gives our children newfound confidence.

What parents may not realize is there are a lot of benefits to orthodontic treatment aside from just straightening teeth, which can be life-changing for a child.

5 Unbelievable Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment:

BENEFIT 1: Helps your child’s self-esteem go through the roof.

Improving their smile will improve their self-confidence. I see it every day at Newpark Orthodontics. Children transform into more confident young adults as their smile progresses during orthodontic treatment. When kids get their braces off, they are beaming with newfound confidence!

If you have a child or teen that’s skeptical of getting braces, try talking to them about life after braces—life with a smile they’ll be proud to share. It’s like putting on an outfit you know you look good in, only you can wear it every day, and it goes with everything. Not only that, when you share a smile with someone else, most likely they’ll smile right back. Studies have shown that the more you smile, the more positive you’ll feel about your life. So, why not make your smile one you’re proud to share with the world?

BENEFIT 2: Your child’s teeth and gums will be healthier.

Good dental hygiene is a sign of your overall health. It really is true—straight teeth have not just cosmetic benefits, but health benefits too! If your teeth are crowded, you can’t clean them properly. Poor oral hygiene can cause plaque to build up, and no parent wants to deal with unnecessary cavities, gum disease, or expensive dental procedures that may have been preventable for their kids. A great way to do that is to get braces or Invisalign because straight teeth are easier to clean.

BENEFIT 3: Your child will speak more clearly.

People who are ashamed of their teeth are more likely to speak with their mouth closed, and that can cause their words to sound as if they’re mumbling. In addition, poorly aligned teeth can cause you to lisp. With the right orthodontic treatment, kids will not only speak more clearly, but they’ll also want to smile more when you do speak.

BENEFIT 4: Their food will go down better.

Straight teeth can make chewing food more comfortable for kids. I know what you’re thinking, “riiiiight.” But, it’s true. When their teeth are in the correct position they’ll be able to chew more effectively, and their body won’t have to work as hard to digest it.

BENEFIT 5: Your child will feel more attractive.

A great smile is a great boost for feeling more attractive. With a smile that’s straight, your child will not only feel more confident (see benefit #1), they’ll also be more outgoing and more open to the world and new experiences. Improved appearance is one of the most common reasons that children and adults alike get orthodontic treatment. At Newpark Orthodontics, we believe beautiful smiles are for everyone, and we make it as easy as possible for families of all ages to get the smile of their dreams.

So, before your kids gorge themselves on Halloween candy, have a heart-to-heart about their smile. If they tell you that they’re feeling self-conscious, or you notice their teeth seem crowded, consider booking a free consultation with Newpark Orthodontics. I’d be happy to meet your family and help your child discover all the benefits that come with a new smile.

And orthodontic treatment is not just for kids! At Newpark Orthodontics, we treat many adults using Invisalign aligners that are clear, removable and comfortable. Our adult patients at Newpark Orthodontics reap the benefits of orthodontic treatment as well. We offer a variety of adult treatments that fit within your lifestyle and budget.
