Goals Over Resolutions

New Year, New MomNew Year. New Me. Right. I don’t think so. It is okay to have a New Year’s resolution but this year I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself. I want to focus on enjoying my son and the little pleasures of life as a mom. So I decided to make a shortlist of goals for myself.

Less time on social media. I want to put my phone down more and spend time with my son. The time spent on social media comparing my life to others could be better spent investing in my son. We can read a book together, play or just give him attention and affection that a young child needs.

Maintain weight. Every year, everybody wants to lose 20 pounds and go to the gym. What if we just do good by not gaining any more weight? Instead of focusing on losing weight, pick a healthy goal to follow throughout the year such as increasing water intake, stop drinking soda or eating chips, chocolate or whatever you decide you can give up. If this was your goal several years ago, you might not need to lose those additional pounds now.

More patience. If nothing else, my son is teaching me a valuable lesson in patience. Lots of moms go into the new year wanting to not yell and scream at their children. That may not be realistic and you don’t want to feel bad on the occasion when it inevitably occurs. But, if the goal is to be more patient that goal may be more easily attainable. Calming alternatives could include counting to ten, breathing techniques, and taking yoga or pilates classes.
