4 Fun Donut Traditions for the Whole Family to do on National Donut Day

Donuts are my soul food. Seriously, if I could eat a bavarian cream filled donut every day without feeling guilty about it, I would. Now all of you may not share the same passion I have for donuts but there are still some fun traditions that you can start to celebrate National Donut Day (June 7).

1. Give Away Donuts on National Donut Day

What you may not know about National Donut Day is that it actually began in 1938 to help those in need during the Great Depression. Women from The Salvation Army would make baked goods and give them to the soldiers during the war. A great way to honor this tradition would be to give some donuts away to friends, family, or someone in need. This is a fun way to serve with your family as well as get a sweet treat!

2. Daddy/Daughter Donut Dates

This tradition for our family started back about 8 months ago during my first trimester of pregnancy. I would often be laying in bed on a Saturday morning so my husband would take my three-year-old daughter to our local coffee shop and get her a donut. Now, whenever we pass the coffee shop my daughter lovingly says it’s the place where “daddy gets me a sprinkle donut.” I think this is such a small but sweet way for my husband and daughter to bond.

3. Birthday Donut Tradition

This is probably a pretty common tradition for a lot of you but like I mentioned above, my family only ate donuts on one of our birthdays. It made that day extra special and we savored those donuts even more because of how infrequently we got to eat them. If one of your children especially loves donuts, you can also make a donut cake instead of an actual cake. A donut cake or donut wall is becoming more and more popular at weddings and showers!

4. Bake Donuts Together

For those of you who are more health conscious or who love to bake, baking donuts can be the way to go to start a tradition in your family! There are so many amazing recipes that you can find on Pinterest that have much less sugar and flour than regular donuts that you buy at the store. There are also paleo, vegan, and gluten-free donut recipes that use substitutes like almond flour, egg free, etc. While baking your own donuts can be more labor-intensive than just buying them, it can also be a special way to bond with your family.

Whatever you do for National Donut Day, I hope you enjoy a donut guilt-free! What are some of your favorite places to eat a donut in Atlanta?
