    WHY:
The Literacy Walk addresses the pressing issue of low literacy rates in Atlanta Public Schools (APS). The statistics highlight the need for community action:

Only 33% of APS students are proficient in reading by the 3rd grade.
Despite 86% APS graduation rates for the class of 2023, literacy rates have remained stagnant for decades.
75% of state prison inmates are low literate and lack high school diplomas.
72% of children of low-literate adults fall into the lowest literacy percentiles.
61% of low-income families have no books at home for their children.
Children in low-income families are exposed to only 25 hours of one-on-one reading, compared to 1,000 to 1,700 hours for children from middle-class families.
In middle-income neighborhoods, the book-to-child ratio is 13:1, while in low-income communities, it is just 1 age-appropriate book per child.
