5 Tips for Self-Motivation

Now that we are a couple of months into the new year, are you still on track with the resolutions or goals you made at the beginning of the year? If not, it’s ok. Being able to motivate yourself to stay on track with resolutions, goals, and commitments, can be a task in itself.

5 Tips for Self-MotivationFinding a system that works for you is key. It may take a little trial and error, but it’s totally doable. Staying motivated can help you develop the consistency and discipline needed to reach your goals. Here are a few tips to help you stay motivated.

5 Tips for Self-Motivation

Re-evaluate your goals

If you have apprehension about achieving your 2023 goals, perhaps you should look at the goals you created. You want to make sure your goals are manageable and realistic. Setting a target for something that is too far out of reach can lead to burnout. Additionally, review your goals on an ongoing basis. Situations and circumstances change, and those changes can affect the goals you set. Readjust as necessary and continue to work towards your new goal.

Set expectations

Perfection is not the name of the game. Whether your goal is short-term or long-term, focus on the progress along the way. Hopefully, the first tip was helpful and you set a realistic goal for yourself with an appropriate timeframe. Most goals are not set to be achieved in seconds. Sometimes it takes days, months, or years to reach a goal. Keep your expectations in perspective by breaking your goal into manageable pieces.

Use positive self-talk

It is common to be self-critical of your progress or lack of progress. During those periods of self-doubt or frustration, try to say at least three positive things about yourself. Change “I can’t” to “I will.” You’ll be amazed when you self-reflect and say “I am proud of myself for……” or “I am happy with myself for getting one step closer to…..”

Celebrate wins along the way

Speaking of progress, don’t forget to celebrate along the way. You can find joy in the journey you take to reach your goal. You will likely celebrate when you reach your goal, but who says you can’t be proud of the accomplishments you made to get to the goal? A celebration can range from treating yourself to a cup of coffee, practicing meditation, or simply expressing gratitude. Document your win and review your wins as you continue to work towards your goal.

Surround yourself with positive people

Self-motivation can sometimes be hard, and you may need a little help. Surrounding yourself with positive people to encourage and support you can help keep you focused. Your goal may be personal to you, but there is no harm in asking for help. Help can come from family, friends, books, or even social media. The important thing to remember is to find a resource that is positive and does not distract you from your goal.

Motivating yourself can be a process, but it is achievable. If you haven’t been told lately, “you can do it!”
