Fun fact, I can stare down a whining kid from over 10 feet away. No lie. It’s not exactly a party trick but it works wonders when my kids are attempting to start an argument as they are walking through Target begging for Disney-inspired underwear…in fact, I am the queen of “you don’t need that, put it down.” Guaranteed, I always leave with a few unhappy kids whenever we go window shopping. But as a stay at home mom of 3, it’s important I teach my kids money doesn’t grow on trees and it is possible to make due with the basics. My kids though, have a hard time understanding that you don’t need the popular brand names, and that middle of the line staples will suffice – typically you can’t even tell the difference. Needless to say, my sonic stare down gets plenty of workouts.

But when I was asked to try out a few pairs of Bombas socks, I was immediately on board. Frankly, I ’m pretty frugal so if you say you’d like to send a boatload of socks for the entire family, what’s there not to be happy about? I mean, they’re socks, right – a must-have when it comes to a family with multiple kids. Honestly, it was a nice enough opportunity but I wasn’t exactly prepared to be wowed.

The Toes Have It

The package arrived brimming over with fluffy, cottony goodness just as my youngsters woke from a nap. They were ecstatic, and I was surprised they were able to muster such energy over an article of clothing absent of a cartoon character. I explained that they’d be my test subjects and would need to offer their honest opinions about what they thought about the socks.

What was the verdict?

Well, my 3-year-old took to the task at once and put the socks on…all at one time. “They’re so soft!” I laughed but noted her rousing endorsement. To be fair, she once threw a temper tantrum because the hem of her pants unraveled, so she probably should get credit for her attention to detail.

The 6-year-old, on the other hand, helped himself into a pair of the ankle socks. Ever the scientist, he did a few laps around the living room, “Mom, these slide REALLY good.”  Two thumbs up for helping him slide!

My critical 8-year-old gathered up her share of goodies and promptly went to pair each of them with a coordinating outfit. She’d get back to me when she wore them properly and fashionably.  She eventually deemed them cozy and stylish.

Bombas for the win with my kiddos!  They all agreed that the socks were “like a foot hug!”

When I finally slid them on, I had to pause, Bombas socks felt like no other pair of socks I’ve worn. I was amazed that there was such a difference in the athletic footwear I usually used. Could 2 pairs of socks really be that different? Was there such thing a Rolls Royce of socks? To be clear, these weren’t even “fancy” socks that I was trying on. There were no crazy designs,  but we all loved the array of colors and styles available. They were just good, well-made socks. They were like a cozy, stylish foot cuddle.

Here are reviews from 2 of my other mom friends and their families:

Alison, wife, and mom of 2 teenagers (an 18-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son)

We give Bombas 4 out of 4 stars.

Mom: “Super comfortable, with a little extra secret padding – my eternally cold feet are now warm.  They give me a flash of color, because, apparently, my daughter thinks I am a boring dresser.”

Dad: “I like them because they are durable, and they have a stiffened ankle that helps grab the foot and keep the socks from becoming quitters.”

Daughter: “They are a great size for sneakers.  Incredibly soft.  And cute.”  (Editor’s note: She tried to go in just Bombas to a family brunch.  We made her wear shoes.)

Son: “I like the cause (1 pair purchased = 1 pair donated).  And the “Bee Better” on the socks is cool.”

Kathy, wife, and mom of a very ACTIVE 6-year-old son

Mom: “I wore my first pair on a particularly long work day. They were so soft and cushioned I was hesitant that they were going to make my feet hot. I wore them over 14 hours. When I finally got home, I was surprised my feet were still cozy (and not sweating!).”

Dad: “I wore dress socks to work and then ankle socks to the gym. Both pairs provided cushion, but also held up well throughout the day.”

Son: “I love wearing them because I can run faster. They are soft and cool looking.”

When Toes Get Techie

When the little kids also insisted on wearing another pair that day (and hadn’t tossed them to the side, forgotten), I went online to see what was up with this company. It turns out, the comfy, hugging quality everyone in my family felt wasn’t a fluke. According to their site:

Bombas engineered a honeycomb structure that hugs your foot where you need it most. We came up with seven material improvements that add up to a new level of engineered comfort and performance in every pair of Bombas socks. Bombas [also] uses the softest long staple yarns from the best cotton and merino wool producers in the world. We believe in the antimicrobial and moisture-wicking properties of high-quality, natural fibers. Our socks contour to your feet, keep you dry all day, and protect you so you can keep doing your thing all day long.”

So the “hug” my kids were feeling was intentional. There was an actual honeycomb (the bumblebee logo even has a really cool meaning and they play up the bee design throughout their products) support system taking care of our feet. Technology was making me love my new socks! Me, the cynic. Who knew?!

The more I scoured their site, the more impressed I was. In addition to these little details, the folks over at Bombas are also making things a bit more comfortable for those that really need it. For every pair of socks purchased, Bombas donates a pair to homeless outreach programs across the country (their current tally is more than 9 million donated to date). Bombas is a company that thinks smart and works hard to do the right thing and both my heart and my feet can appreciate that.

My husband now makes it a point to golf in his Bombas ankle socks (anything to lessen that handicap, I think). The kids are also still big fans of the “squishy, super soft socks they think make them jump a little higher. And as for me, I may have just realized that maybe I should leave the bulk buying to my toilet paper and not the comfort of my feet. Maybe it’s ok to invest in the basics as long as they do a little more in return…and I’m testing that theory out all the way from the bottom up!
