With the holidays approaching (and giving top of mind for many families), I know some of you moms are looking for good causes to expose your kids to and support, as a family. Personally, I have been on the search for an organization to support with a cause that hits home with my children. A cause that, as young elementary students, they can understand and get excited about contributing to – and with that in mind, I am happy to share the following on Beech-Nut’s partnership with No Kid Hungry.
First, I will share some stats that may resonate with your children:
-
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2017 over 13 million children lived in households whose yearly income falls below the federal poverty level (which is $25,750 for a family of four).
-
In Georgia, over 23% of children under the age of 18 live in households that experienced limited or uncertain availability of safe, nutritious foods at some point during the year. Unfortunately, Georgia falls above the national average on this statistic. (Source: Feeding America)
-
Over 17% of children in Georgia participated in the summer meals program in 2015, based on the number of low-income students who qualified for free or reduced-price lunch during the school year. (Source: FRAC)
My kids wake up every morning before school to breakfast, they eat lunch every day with friends in their cafeteria, and they come home to a warm meal every night, without question. Three meals a day is a basic necessity, and admittedly, our family takes for granted that our refrigerator and pantry are stocked each week. But the numbers and percentages listed above prove that this isn’t the case with many who live in our area.
Luckily, there are organizations that we can support that are striving to reduce these numbers. No Kid Hungry is working to end child hunger in America by connecting kids to effective nutrition programs like school breakfast and summer meals. Beech-Nut is partnering with No Kid Hungry to make this happen – Beech-Nut has committed to donate more than 3 million meals to kids in need by 2020.
